Foundation Stage Curriculum

Starting school is a wonderful time for children and at Emberton School we strive to ensure that the children are happy and love to learn in a creative and stimulating environment which meets their own particular needs and interests.


Learning is encouraged through opportunities for adult guided and independent learning through play, exploration and thinking. The children are all encouraged to develop independence and an ability to work successfully with other adults and children.


The magic of being a small school is that our Foundation Stage children work very closely with our older children who provide excellent buddies, mentors and role models.


There are four themes which underpin learning in the Early Years Stage:


  • A Unique Child- every child is unique and who is constantly learning, can be resilient, confident and self-assured
  • Positive Relationships- Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • Enabling Environments- Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which experiences respond to their individual needs and there is strong partnership between parents and carers
  • Learning and Development-Children develop and learn in different ways. All children are seen as unique and so the curriculum is tailored and personalised to maximise a child's progress.

Areas of learning and development are all interconnected:


There are three prime areas of learning and development in Foundation Stage. These prime areas are fundamental to successful learning and work together as the child progresses through each development stage.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development


There are then four specific areas to include essential skills and knowledge. They grow out of the prime areas and provide important contexts for learning. These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Each child is then regularly assessed through the year against the prime and specific learning areas. This is completed through observing the children primarily in their independent learning to see how successfully they are able to apply their skills and knowledge in a range of contexts.
